Basic Concepts of Lighting Design for Star-rated Hotels

Dec 03 2018

As we all know, in hotel lighting design, lighting is not simply used to illuminate buildings or interior space, but needs to be integrated with architecture, structure, electromechanical, etc. It is a systematic and scientific engineering design.

As a comprehensive service provider that combines catering, lodging and entertainment, a five-star hotel can no longer satisfy the needs of consumers simply by illuminating the architecture and interior space. Good hotel lighting design in this case has become an important attraction for customers.

The five-star brand hotels have different architectural styles, which are designed to show their brand features. Therefore, in lighting design, the architectural floodlight is used to highlight the roof and the podium, while retaining the dynamic effect of the main building. Generally, only one or two colors are used, with lighting patterns and rhythms combined to outline the overall shape.

In the key areas of the interior space, a variety of scenarios are usually set, such as 30%, 50% and 100% lighting effects. In the initial design, some energy-saving lamps, LED lamps, and dimmable adjustable and movable lamp holders are selected to enable flexible switching between multiple scenarios.

Different five-star brand hotels often have their specific lighting standards. In addition to the professional technical requirements of lighting design (luminance, color temperature, glare, heat dissipation, infrared light and ultraviolet light), good hotel lighting design should also be aesthetic. While being environment-friendly and energy efficient, the design should also keep up with the industry trend, such as the application of 3D and 4D lighting.

Let's take a look at the basic design concepts that are required in the interior lighting design of a star-rated hotel:

Every hotel is a long-term investment, so durability is the top priority. The service of a hotel, especially a star-rated hotel, is always focused on thoughtfulness, so the impacts of maintenance or daily operations should be minimized. Star-rated hotels are often presented in a high-profile style. Therefore, the details and projection indices of the selected lamps should also be considered.

1 Durability

A star-rated hotel undergoes a small renovation every five years and a large renovation every ten years. In other words, the lifespan of the lighting fixture must be at least ten years or more to meet the requirements of a star-rated hotel, because in small maintenance, lamps are not replaced, for it will involve too much human resource. This means that the choice of the right lamp style, and the quality of the most heated and stressed parts of the lamp (including the reflector cup, the heat sink), and the fixing (positioning) components, are of great importance.

2 Flexibility

The light source used in a star-rated hotel usually has a life span of about 2,000 to 4,000 hours. Therefore, in the 10 years, light source of the lamps has to be changed frequently. The number of star-rated hotel lamps is over 10,000, so the replacement of the light source involves a huge amount of labor. Therefore, flexibility of the lamps has to be considered. For an ideal lamp, the removal and installation of the light source does not affect the fixing (positioning) components. It not only saves time, but also provides positive protection for interior decoration.

3 Detailing

As mentioned above, the star-rated hotels have their own styles, which is reflects the success of interior design. The details of the lamps also contribute to this success.

This includes all aspects of the lamp itself. Take the ceiling downlight as an example, the trim’s spray quality (metal trim), the smoothness of the reflector (frosted reflector), the compactness between the luminaire and the ceiling are all details that need to pay attention to.

In addition to the hardware (luminaire), the skillful installation workers are also important. They can guarantee the lamps are installed in the correct way.

4 Light projection indices

Star-rated hotels should give customers a comfortable, high-end, and stylish environment, so "lighting/lighting design" should try to display this kind of environment and minimize the impact.

Generally, the “lighting indices” include the following: glare effect, how to collect the light source, the elasticity of the luminaire projection, the expandability of the accessories, etc. These are all factors influencing the selection of lamps. The expandability of accessories should be given particular consideration, because the overall atmosphere is mostly created by these accessories.
